What Is the Glass Hair Trend?
The Origin
This style can trace its origins back a very long way. Bobs with sharp cuts were in fact introduced by Vidal Sassoon way back in the 1960’s. Before then women had of course always worn their hair long, and it rarely if ever had aggressive cuts to it. Needless to say it was quite the head turner and has stuck around since.
The second aspect of the cut is of course the polished look. It’s hard to say exactly where this was introduced. After all, everyone has always been trying to make their hair look shiny. At some point some nameless innovator decided to take that idea farther than it had been before and developed the polished look we see in the glass cut.
Why Is it Around Now?
Well, no one can say for sure why fashions ebb and flow. If you look at certain periods you’d wonder if there was any method to the madness at all. At any rate in the summer of 2018 there was a huge rush of bobs in Hollywood. It seemed as though everyone and their mother was rocking one. Now of course a Hollywood starlet can’t merely follow the crowd. She must do what she can to stand above it. And so some had the idea to style the hair in a way that made it look like polished glass, cementing their dominance of Instagram.
How to Get the Look
The glass hair trend is fortunately a very simple hair style. You start with the bob we all know and love. Then the only thing you have to do special is make sure that the cut on the bottom is sharp and geometric. Think how you might cut a gem. Or if someone had slashed off your hair instead of cutting it.
The next aspect of course is the glass look. This is achieved by brushing ultra fine sections of your hair while simultaneously straightening it. Next you’re going to want to work some oil into the ends, and finish with some hairspray. That’s it that’s all.
Who's Wearing One?
It seems as though the summer of 2018 was the summer of ‘the bob.’ Nearly everyone was rocking one. Rihanna was of course rocking one. Not surprising, as she’s often worn one over the years. Emma Roberts could be seen with a platinum blonde version. Not one, but two of the Kardashian sisters could be seen sporting bobs. Lucy Hale posted a picture of her amazing black version. Even the always adorable Emilia Clarke was seen with one. She had perhaps the most interesting reason, attributing it to her need to get rid of split ends caused by her dragons.
What Else Can You do With a Bob?
The bob is well known as perhaps one of the most versatile styles. The only real rule is your hair needs to be short. That’s it. This gives you a plethora of options to work with. One of the most common is the A-line bob. The A-line is short and layered in the back, equal on the sides, and longer in the front. For a bit more of an edgy look there is of course the shaved head version. This is of course a bob where part of the head, usually the side, is shaved. Natalie Dormer of Game of Thrones fame has often been seen with this cut.
Who Does the Style Compliment?
The great thing about a bob hairstyles is most stylists agree it looks good on everyone. The glass hair bob of course is a pretty specific version. You have some flexibility with things like length, or shaving part of your head, but otherwise it’s pretty set. Even still, it tends to compliment nearly everyone.
It can of course be scary to take the plunge and shear your luscious locks off. If you’re not sure stylists recommend pinning your hair up to get an idea of how it looks beforehand. This way you can get a pretty good idea of how things are going to turn out in the end.
